EXTENDED AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMME – PRIMARY
Contracted to the Y through the Ministry of Education, the EASP serves up to 1,600 students from public schools across Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. The goals of the programme include: to improve social, emotional, and academic competencies; provide comprehensive youth development activities with a focus on character development; and provide parents with a safe after-school environment for their children. The Y’s core values of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, and faith are integrated into all after-school activities.
This programme reaches children most in need during the critical after school hours, helping them build confidence as well as social and emotional awareness. Our primary purpose addresses the main and underlying cause of the majority of challenges our community faces. The Y teaches, and is rooted in basic, core values that inspire youth and build character for all. We focus on prevention to reduce the severity of need for intervention later in life.
The primary school programme runs Monday through Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and includes arts, STEM, literacy, FitKids, and clubs. Upon arrival, students get a healthy snack and have homework time before breaking out into planned activities.
The programme is offered at the following Primary School sites:
- Sir John A. Cumber Primary School
- George Town Primary School
- Red Bay Primary School
- Bodden Town Primary School
- East End Primary School
- Edna M. Moyle Primary School
- Cayman Brac Primary Schools programme is offered at the Layman E. Scott High School
Parents interested in enrolling their children in the EASP should contact their school office for registration forms and confirmation. There is availability for children at schools where the programme is not offered at their site. For information about these options please contact your school office.
The EASP is funded in large part by government and a private trust, with additional support by the private sector. Primary school students pay a small fee of $25 per month, and the High School participants assist by planning and hosting fundraisers.
